1. Overview

Baby Names by the Numbers (“the app”) is a free Android app published by Stronghealth. There is no account, no sign-up and no server of ours. The name data is bundled inside the app itself, so looking up a name does not send anything anywhere. The only component that uses the network is the Google AdMob advertising SDK.

2. What stays on your device

The app writes exactly three things to your phone’s local app storage: your shortlist, whether you were last browsing girls’ or boys’ names, and the bookkeeping that limits how often ads appear — the day you installed the app, the day an ad was last shown, how many have been shown today, and when the last one was. Nothing else is stored, including the names you look up and the years you view.

We never receive any of it. We do not operate a server or a database that holds user data, and we do not know who you are or which names you looked up.

One thing worth being exact about: the app leaves Android’s own backup enabled, so that a shortlist you build over months is not lost when you change phone. That means Android may copy this local data to your Google account and restore it on a new device. That backup is between you and Google — it is controlled by your Google account settings and we never see it. Uninstalling the app removes the data from the device; it does not delete the backup copy, and installing the app again can restore it. You can review or delete that copy in the backup settings of your Google account. Turning backup off stops further backups; it does not delete a copy that has already been made.

3. Advertising

The app shows advertising supplied by Google AdMob. To serve and measure those ads, the AdMob SDK collects and shares your device’s advertising ID and other device identifiers. This happens inside Google’s SDK; we never see the data ourselves and we do not combine it with anything else. Google’s handling of it is described in the Google Privacy & Terms. You can reset or delete your advertising ID at any time in Android under Settings → Privacy → Ads.

For transparency, this is the whole of the app’s advertising: one banner, at most two full-screen ads in a calendar day (never on the day you install it, never before you have opened six name pages in that session, and never within six minutes of the previous one), and at most one app-open ad per calendar day, never on first run.

4. Permissions

The app never asks you for a permission. Not your location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos or files — there is no permission dialog anywhere in it, at install or in use.

The entries that appear in the manifest come from the Android and advertising libraries the app is built with, and none of them is a permission Android asks you to grant: INTERNET and ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE (used only by the ad SDK), VIBRATE, WAKE_LOCK, FOREGROUND_SERVICE, the Google advertising entries AD_ID and ACCESS_ADSERVICES_*, and one internal AndroidX marker permission scoped to this app alone. The storage and “display over other apps” entries that ship with the default Android build template have been removed from this app.

5. Children

The app is a reference tool for adults choosing a name. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect any information from children.

6. Where the name data comes from

This app is an independent product. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of the U.S. Social Security Administration or any government agency.

The counts shown in the app come from the U.S. Social Security Administration’s national baby-name data, which is in the public domain. It is bundled with the app at build time and is never fetched while you use it. The SSA withholds any name given to fewer than five babies in a year, so some spellings are absent from the data entirely; the app says so on screen rather than reporting those names as zero. Rates are divided by the SSA’s official card-holder table, which counts applicants for a Social Security card and is not a raw birth count.
