Read Aloud: Text to Speech — Last updated: July 22, 2026
1. Overview
Read Aloud: Text to Speech ("the App") is a free Android app that reads your text, articles, and documents out loud using your device's text-to-speech engine. This Privacy Policy explains how the App handles information when you use it.
2. Information We Collect
The App does not collect, store, or transmit your text, documents, or personal information to our servers. It has no user accounts and no sign-up. Your reading items and playback position are stored only on your device (in a local database) and never leave it. There is no server-side communication other than fetching a web article you ask it to read (Section 3) and loading advertisements (Section 5).
3. Content You Add
- Pasted or shared text — kept on your device and read aloud; never uploaded.
- Files you pick (.txt, .epub) — chosen through Android's system document picker, so the App only ever accesses the specific file you select. It does not request broad storage or media permissions and cannot browse your other files.
- Web article URLs — when you ask the App to read a link, it fetches that page over the internet and extracts the article text on your device. Only the page you provide is requested.
4. Text-to-Speech & Background Playback
The App uses your device's built-in text-to-speech engine to speak the text on your device. To keep playing while the screen is off or the App is in the background, it runs a media-playback foreground service and shows a playback notification with controls. This is local playback only — no audio is recorded, and the App does not use your microphone.
5. Third-Party Services
- Google AdMob — for advertisements. The App shows a banner on the library screen, an app-open ad on a normal launch, and an occasional full-screen ad at natural transition points. It shows no advertisements while audio is playing or on the player screen. AdMob may collect device identifiers (such as Advertising ID) and usage data to serve personalized or non-personalized ads. See the Google Privacy Policy.
6. Permissions
The App requests only what it needs:
- Notifications — to show the playback controls notification.
- Internet — to fetch a web article you provide and to load ads.
The App does not use or request access to your microphone, camera, location, contacts, photos, or your general files/media storage.
7. Data Storage
The App does not create user accounts and does not sync any data to the cloud. Your reading list and positions stay on your device. Uninstalling the App removes your local data and any cached AdMob data stored on the device.
8. Children's Privacy
The App is suitable for general audiences and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
