1. Overview
Dictation Notes: Voice to Text ("the App") is a free Android speech-to-text notepad. You tap the microphone, speak, and your words are turned into text notes that are saved on your device. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use the App.
2. Information We Collect
The App has no accounts or developer-operated notes server. Notes are saved in a local database, subject to Android backup settings. They are not automatically attached to analytics or feedback. Your device's speech service may process audio; Google SDKs process usage and device information; optional feedback is stored in Tally.
3. Microphone & Speech Recognition
When you start dictation, the App uses your device's built-in speech-recognition service (provided by Google on most Android devices) to convert your speech to text. Depending on your device and settings:
- Standard (network) recognition — your microphone audio is sent to the device's speech-recognition service provider to be transcribed, subject to that provider's policy; for Google, see the Google Privacy Policy. The App itself does not record, keep, or upload the audio; it only receives the transcribed text.
- On-device recognition (used when you enable the optional "Auto punctuation" setting on Android 13+) — the App requests local recognition. This requires a compatible downloaded language pack; support varies by device, service and language. Standard recognition may send audio to the provider.
The App requests the microphone (RECORD_AUDIO) permission only for this purpose, and only when you first start dictation. The App does not record audio to files.
4. Third-Party Services
- Google Mobile Ads SDK — displays a banner on the note list. There are no ads on dictation or editing screens, and no app-open or post-save fullscreen requests. The SDK may collect and share device/account identifiers, app interactions, diagnostics and an IP address used to infer approximate location for advertising, analytics and fraud prevention. Data is encrypted in transit using TLS. See the Google Privacy Policy.
- Google Firebase Analytics — collects app interactions, diagnostics, device information and identifiers to understand usage. It processes IP addresses to estimate location but does not log or store them. Note text and audio are not custom analytics events. See Firebase privacy information.
- Tally — stores feedback type, message, optional reply email, app identifier/name, installed version/build, Android platform, device manufacturer/model, OS name/version, app language and entry point. Technical request information is processed to operate the form. Notes and audio are not attached. See Tally Privacy Policy.
Where required, Google consent is requested before ads. Use Settings → Privacy choices to revisit available options. Speech processing and retention depend on the selected device service and its settings; review that provider's privacy controls for any audio history.
Feedback retention and deletion
Feedback is used to investigate problems, improve the app and reply when an email is supplied. It is retained for up to 24 months unless law requires longer. Do not include sensitive information. To request deletion, use the feedback form and state “Dictation Notes feedback deletion”, approximate submission date and any reply email supplied. Matching feedback/contact details are deleted within 30 days after verifying the request, except records required by law.
5. Permissions
The App requests only what it needs:
- Microphone — to transcribe your speech to text (Section 3).
- Internet — for standard speech recognition, ads, analytics and optional feedback.
- Keep screen on — so the screen stays awake while you dictate.
The App does not use or request access to your location, contacts, camera, photos, files, or physical-activity sensors.
6. Data Storage
The App does not create user accounts or sync notes to a developer-operated server. Notes are stored locally, subject to Android backup settings. Items in Trash can be restored for up to 30 days; older items are removed automatically when the app next starts. Uninstalling the App removes your local data and any cached advertising data stored on the device. Android backup is left enabled for this App, so a copy of that data may also exist in your Google account. Uninstalling does not delete that copy, and installing the App again can restore it. You can review or delete it in the backup settings of your Google account.
7. Children's Privacy
The App is suitable for general audiences and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
